Ethical Statement

FR |  EN

ASDIWAL. Revue genevoise d'anthropologie et d'histoire des religions is an international peer-reviewed scholarly journal. Multilingual, ASDIWAL is published in printed form as well as online in open access on the website www.asdiwal.ch through the Perseus portal (www.persee.fr/collection/asdi). Since its founding in 2006, the journal has become an important reference in the field of the study of religion. The journal adopts a critical and comparative approach applied to the history and anthropology of religions. ASDIWAL welcomes studies that articulate rigorous historical or ethnographic analysis with theoretical and/or methodological issues, without restriction in terms of period or context.

The journal is published once a year and welcomes submissions from both young researchers and established scholars. All submissions accepted by the editorial board are subject to a double blind peer review. The journal does not solicit any financial contribution from authors (no APC, "Article Processing Charge"). Each volume is freely accessible on the Perseus portal after one year (www.persee.fr/collection/asdi, under CC BY-NC-SA license).

The Ethical Statement is based on the recommendations of the Publication Ethics Committee (COPE) Good Practices drafted in 2011.

1. Obligations of the editor

Art. 1.1. Neutrality

The intellectual content of submitted manuscripts is evaluated regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, ethnicity, and/or political philosophy of the authors.

Art. 1.2. Confidentiality

All manuscripts are treated with full confidentiality. They are disclosed only with the permission of the editorial board. Managers and editorial staff are prohibited from disclosing information about the manuscript submitted to anyone except the author, reviewers and potential reviewers.

Art. 1.3. Disclosure of information and conflicts of interest

Unpublished data contained in submitted manuscripts are not used by editors or reviewers in their own research without the explicit consent of the author.

1.4. Open access

Asdiwal is an open access journal. The journal does not ask authors to contribute to the publication costs (no APC “Article Processing Charge”). Articles are published in open access on the Perseus portal (www.persee.fr/collection/asdi, under CC BY-NC-SA license), one year after the publication of each printed volume.

Art. 1.5. Decision on publication
  1. Articles submitted for publication in the “Dossiers” and “Études” sections of the journal are evaluated by the editorial board, which follows the journal's editorial policy, taking into account the legal obligations concerning defamation, copyright and plagiarism. In agreement with the Scientific Committee, the Editorial Board may reject an article before submitting it to the double-blind peer review process if it does not follow the editorial line.
  2. Upon agreement of the editorial board, submitted articles are sent anonymously for evaluation to two reviewers recognized as experts in the field concerned (double-blind peer review). After a maximum of six months, the author of the article proposed for publication receives a summary report from the two reviewers and the decision of the editorial board: (1) acceptable for publication; (2) acceptable for publication after revision; (3) acceptable for publication after substantial revision requiring further evaluation; (4) not acceptable for publication. The editor may share the decision with the members of the scientific committee or with the reviewers. In the event of an appeal of the decision, the editor may solicit new reviewers.
  3. Contributions published in the “Entretiens”, “Tables rondes”, “Notules” and “Comptes rendus” sections are articles commissioned from their author by the editorial board. They are not subject to the double-blind peer review process, but are evaluated internally by the editorial board.
Art. 1.6. Plagiarism Detection

The editorial board acts against breaches of research ethics and does not tolerate plagiarism. It systematically takes steps to detect plagiarism (expert proofreading, verification using computer tools).

Art. 1.7. Corrections and Article Withdrawals

If necessary, the editorial board will consider publishing corrections or clarifications for an article, withdrawing the article or publishing an apology, according to the guidelines formulated by COPE (2019 guidelines: https://publicationethics.org/retraction-guidelines).

Art. 1.8. Data Policy and Archiving
  1. One year after its publication, the entirety of each issue of the journal Asdiwal is published online in open access on the Perseus portal, under the CC BY-NC-SA license.
  2. Authors have the right to publish articles based on their research data at any time, including after they have published an article in the journal.
  3. The journal’s OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) metadata policy is that of the Perseus portal.
  4. The permanent online archiving of all back issues of the journal (except the current issue) is provided by the Perseus portal.

2. Obligations of Reviewers

Art. 2.1. Editorial Decisions

Reviewers assist the editorial board in making decisions and may also assist the author in improving the quality of their manuscript.

Art. 2.2. Delays and Deadlines

When an invited reviewer does not feel competent enough to evaluate the research presented in the manuscript, or if s/he finds her/himself unable to provide a report in time, s/he must inform the editorial board without delay in order to give the board time to contact other reviewers.

Art. 2.3. Standards of Objectivity, Civility, and Respect

Reviewers’ reports must be objective. Personal remarks and criticisms directed at the author or hurtful remarks directed at the text content are not eligible. The opinion of the reviewer must be clear, reasoned, and respectful of the author.

Art. 2.4. Indication of Sources

The reviewer must identify appropriate publications not cited by the author. Any such indication must be accompanied by an appropriate comment. The reviewer should draw the editors’ attention to any similarity, any overlap between the manuscript and previously published texts or data.

Art. 2.5. Disclosure of Information and Conflicts of Interest

Information and ideas obtained through anonymous review are confidential and should not be used for the personal benefit of the reviewer. Reviewers should not accept reviewing manuscripts where this may result in a conflict of interest arising from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships with an author.

3. Obligations of the Authors

Art. 3.1. Information Validity

The information contained in manuscripts submitted for publication must present the results of the authors’ research as well as an objective discussion of these results and their importance. The underlying data must be presented correctly. Fraudulent and consciously inaccurate information is considered unethical and unacceptable.

Research not produced by the author must always be clearly attributed. Authors should cite the publications that influenced the study in question.

Art. 3.2. Originality and Plagiarism

Authors must ensure that they have written a completely original study, and if they have used other people’s published works or statements, these must be properly cited.

Art. 3.3. Multiple Publications

An author should not submit manuscripts representing the same study to more than one journal (or book). Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal is unethical and unacceptable.

ASDIWAL accepts articles originally published in languages other than French. In this case, the author must provide the reference of the original publication and must ensure that it is free from the copyright of the original publisher.

Art. 3.4. Authorship of the Manuscript

Only authors who have made a significant contribution to the study in question are considered authors. All those who contributed to the study must be present in the list of authors. If other people have been involved in some aspects of the research project, they must be mentioned in the acknowledgments.

The lead author must ensure that all co-authors are included in the list of authors of the manuscript, that the co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript, and that they have agreed to the submission of the manuscript.

Art. 3.5. Disclosure of Information and Conflicts of Interest

All authors must indicate, after their biographical information, any conflicts of interest that may affect their proposed publication. Funding for research projects that made the study possible must be indicated.

Art. 3.6. Errors in Publishing

If the author discovers an important error or an inaccuracy in its published version, s/he must quickly inform the editors and to consider, in agreement with the person in charge, the withdrawal of the article or the publication of information concerning the error.
